1984 300td 5mt with 180k miles on it. Interior is pretty good, no rips or discoloration or anything, but it has a little bit of rust, and a possible fault in the sls. If I were to buy it, I’d need to address the rust and paint it brown to complete the Oppo holy quadrinity of automotive features. I’ve heard it can be easy to replace the accumulators for the sls <$200 or just spend $90 on shocks from an w12something e320 wagon and call it a day, giving up about 500lbs in payload capacity. What do you all think would be a reasonable price for this? Going to look at it this weekend. According to the seller, a number of greasecar people have expressed interest in it, but the sls issue might be scaring them away, with possible $2000 repair costs and whatnot I don’t blame them.

How much? Be aware that these are dog slow, but there’s nothing like bumbling along in an older Mercedes wagon in the winter with the heat going. I actually didn’t realize there were W123s out there with SLS, but as is the case with the W124 (had two, currently have one...), get rid of the system. It performs better without it anyway, and it’s not worth trying to maintain it.

180k miles is way low for these cars, but it’s still 31 years old. Where is the rust?

Picture of the interior confirms automagic.

I made this guide for the w123. It’s hard to tell from the pictures but probably in the $2500 to $4000 range. Was the 5 speed added later or was the car imported because I believe only the 240D was offered in the states with a manual(4 speed).

The rear bumper looks kinda wonky and if the sls is indeed failing I’d be at the lower end of that range.

Also, where is this in case you pass it up?

After seeing the listing I am revising my original comment to buy it.

Don’t pass it up, don’t paint it brown and what is SLS?

An automatic makes a slow car even slower :/

Otherwise, for a 3 decade old car it looks to be in great shape. That MBTex interior is seemingly indestructible. 180k miles on a W123 TD is nothing, or close to nothing.

As for the awesome Self Leveling Suspension, well, personally I’d want that working, not sure exactly why. Don’t think I’d miss the extra payload capacity. But let’s face it: when old SLS systems wear out (as they almost always do) most people replace them with a standard set up. Most people, in this case, are probably right.

Replacement should be cheap, so I’d say go check it out but it’s an automagic so...

Rats... Maybe that’s why the guy didn’t email me a pic of the interior... I only saw the car in a print ad in a local car ad magazine, when I talked to the salesmen on the phone he said it was a 5-speed... Didn’t even think to look online though, Isn’t that false advertisement?

I drove a Ford f-250 with a diesel and a 5-speed for awhile, I’m used to slow.. Timed a 12 second 0-60 run once, I can’t imagine it being that much slower... Hopefully...

If I do buy this, It’s getting a holset hx-35 turbo, the injection pump screw turned up to eleven, a turbo back exhaust, and whatever manual transmission bolts up to the back of this thing the easiest..

I have a w123, its not a euro model so it has to be automatic unless they got the manual parts. I love mine, they are reliable but they are still an older car and need routine repairs. It’s a NP if it’s clean. Mine was low miles and amazing interior at $7k.
